Job Title:  Director – Sustainability  - North America Operations

Location: Clark, New Jersey


Position Overview: As the Director- Sustainability  - North America Operations, you will be directly responsible for supporting the sustainability project management team to deliver challenging projects. You will manage and deliver sustainability advisory services. You will collect and prepare the strategy and reporting documentation, track metrics, maintain schedules and budgets and deliver client updates. Your interest in sustainability projects from start to finish will speak to your ability to support your team in delivering impactful results. You are accountable, collaborative, a self-starter, and demonstrate enthusiasm for implementing innovative ideas in a team environment. You are proactive and can think ahead to anticipate the needs of the team regarding market trends, data accuracy, research, and project management-related technology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of the Renewable Natural Gas contract
  • Collaborate with the North American sites as the primary engineer in developing and driving solutions for the following L’Oreal For The Future 2030 Initiatives (including budgeting and PDCA methodology):
    • Develop and manage methods to eliminate R22 cooling refrigerant and manage cooling refrigerant leaks at all sites to control scope 1 emissions and maintain Carbon Neutrality.  
    • Implement Waterloop or Dry Factory projects for the factories as established in the Zone Waterloop Roadmap
    • Develop and manage water consumption reduction projects at all sites to reduce water consumption at zone level to targeted levels.
    • Develop and manage wastewater discharge projects to ensure COD levels are less than 1000 mg/l.
    • Develop and manage wastewater sludge projects for the factories to ensure less all sites achieve less than 10 kg (sludge)/T (tons bulk produced).
    • Develop and manage energy consumption reduction projects at all sites to reduce energy consumption at zone level.
    • Develop transportable waste reduction projects at all sites to reduce transportable waste (except for sludge) at zone level to targeted levels.
    • Increase the zone transportable waste material recovery % (including WWTP sludges) from 54% currently to 75% by 2025 and to 100% by 2030.   This process will include developing and managing solutions for reusing or recycling waste only versus incineration or landfill.
    • Increase the biodiversity baseline scores to the site-specific goals for 2025 and 2030 (Net Positive).
    • Ensure zero pesticide use for all green areas for all sites.  
  • Influence and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, while driving best change management practices through communication.
  • Partner with our Worldwide teams to proactively manage external engagement workflows and issues for L’Oréal Sustainability, including creation of systems and operating models to drive internal process improvements and stakeholder management. Identify internal process gaps and propose new processes where relevant alongside Business Leaders.
  • Build and scale partnerships with NGOs, academia and other actors to accelerate delivery of L’Oréal’s sustainability ambitions across the ESG landscape.
  • Develop and enhance systems and processes for delivering best practice sustainability performance and use of utility/sustainability management systems for monitoring and/or reporting purposes.
  • Drive insightful discussions with key stakeholders (Business Leaders, Social Responsibility Program Managers, Legal, Public Relations, and Public Policy) and external stakeholders.
  • Work in close collaboration with Supply Chain EHS&S leadership
  • Act as the facilitator and ensure the synergy of the Zone EHS&S Steering Team
  • Drive internal compliance audit process and lead cross-functional teams in maintaining ISO 50001 certifications.
  • Ensure internal GRAAL data timely completion and accuracy by reviewing each month and conducting periodic audits.


Key Qualifications + Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, environmental, or related science field is required. A Master’s degree is preferred. Certifications such as CSP, CIH, CEM, or CHMM are required. 
  • Minimum of 8+ years working in Sustainability, ESG, legal, or public policy fields
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of leadership experience with multiple sites
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) Licensure preferred
  • Lead auditor trained for ISO 50001, preferred.
  • Experience managing sustainability initiatives such as water reduction, energy reduction, waste reduction, and carbon neutrality
  • Influence and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, while driving best change management practices through communication.
  • Drive operational improvements through the identification and implementation of opportunities to improve energy and sustainability performance across extensive real estate portfolios.
  • Engage with L’Oreal facility managers to become the key point of contact for the provision of wide-ranging advice in relation to all aspects of environmental sustainability
  • Demonstrate a passion for the business, the ability to energize others, and the willingness to take risks and make tough decisions.
  • Must have authorization to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent, ongoing basis, without the need for sponsorship now or in the future.
