How to Nail Your Next Interview with the S-T-A-R-E Method

In this educational video, a L'Oréal recruiter demonstrates how to structure interview responses using the S-T-A-R-E framework (Situation, Task, Action, Result, Evaluation). The video illustrates both a common conversational pitfall to avoid and an effective, professional answer centered on cross-functional collaboration and sustainable packaging.

Speaker: Can you describe a time for me where you felt stressed at work, and how did you manage that situation?

[Visual / On-screen text: ❌ DON'T'S ❌]

Candidate (Example of what not to do): So the other day, I mean, my dog got really, really sick. I had to rush home from work and, I mean, I rushed him to the vet. It was so terrible. I mean, he got better at the end of the day. I mean, he's much better now and oh, he's so cute! I mean, do you want to see? I have a picture of him. Oh, where's my phone?

[Visual: Speaker looks confused and unimpressed]

Speaker: Don't do that. Do this instead.

[Visual / On-screen text: ✅ DO'S ✅]

[Visual / On-screen text: S - SITUATION]

Candidate (Example using STARE method): I was leading the launch of a sustainable new packaging line to hit key sustainability targets. I had to coordinate multiple teams: R&I, packaging engineers, sourcing. All of them had different priorities and timelines.

[Visual / On-screen text: ST - TASK]

Candidate: I was accountable to ensure collaboration between teams so that the project stayed on track, on budget, and met its sustainability objectives.

[Visual / On-screen text: STA - ACTION]

Candidate: I got everyone aligned with a crystal-clear roadmap, complete with deadlines and milestones. I mean, we had workshops, weekly check-ins, total transparency to tackle any roadblocks.

[Visual / On-screen text: STAR - RESULT]

Candidate: So six months later, we nailed it! We launched on schedule, within budget, and significantly increased the use of sustainable materials in our packaging.

[Visual / On-screen text: STARE - EVALUATION]

Candidate: The key takeaway? Sustainability is a team sport. We had to break down silos between departments to create packaging that really resonates with today's consumers.

Speaker: Now that was a great answer!
