Job Description: Slotting Analyst

Location: North Little Rock, AR – NLR Distribution Center

Department: Operations / Inventory

Mission

The Slotting Analyst is the architect of the fulfillment center’s efficiency. Your primary mission is to optimize the physical placement of inventory (slotting) to minimize travel time, maximize pick density, and ensure the highest possible throughput. You will translate complex data sets into actionable physical layouts that balance warehouse ergonomics with operational speed.

Key Responsibilities

1. Data-Driven Optimization (Strategic)

  • Velocity Analysis: Conduct regular ABC velocity analysis to categorize products based on frequency of movement (Fast, Medium, Slow).
  • Product Affinity: Analyze order history to identify "item pairs" or groups frequently ordered together to locate them in proximity.
  • Seasonal Planning: Proactively adjust the warehouse map for seasonal peaks, promotions, and new product launches (NPL).
  • Cubing & Dimensioning: Maintain accurate master data for product dimensions and weights to ensure optimal bin utilization.

2. Operational Execution (Tactical)

  • Move Management: Generate and prioritize daily/weekly "re-slotting" move tasks for the warehouse floor teams.
  • Congestion Mitigation: Design layouts that prevent "bottlenecks" by spreading high-velocity items across different aisles to balance picker traffic.
  • Ergonomics & Safety: Ensure heavy or bulky items are slotted in the "Golden Zone" (between waist and shoulder height) to prevent injuries and speed up handling.

3. System & Tools Management

  • WMS Coordination: Work within the Warehouse Management System (e.g., SAP EWM, Manhattan) to manage slotting logic and location configurations.
  • Slotting Software: Utilize dedicated slotting optimization tools to run "what-if" scenarios for layout changes.
  • Heat Mapping: Create visual heat maps of the facility to identify underutilized zones or high-traffic areas.

Required Qualifications

Technical Skills:

  • Analytical Proficiency: Advanced Excel (Power Query, Pivot Tables, VBA) is mandatory.
  • Data Querying: Strong SQL skills to extract and manipulate large datasets from WMS databases.
  • Visualization: Experience with Power BI or Tableau to communicate warehouse performance trends.
  • WMS Knowledge: Functional understanding of Warehouse Management Systems and how slotting logic affects picking paths.

Experience & Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in a high-volume distribution or fulfillment center.
  • Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma principles is a strong plus.

Soft Skills

  • Physical Intuition: The ability to see beyond the data and understand the physical reality of warehouse flows and constraints.
  • Collaborative Mindset: Ability to work closely with Floor Supervisors and Pickers to validate that data-driven moves work in practice.
  • Agility: Comfort working in a fast-paced environment where priorities change based on daily order volume.

Metrics of Success (KPIs)

  • Pick Path Reduction: Reduction in average travel distance per order.
  • Pick Density: Increase in the number of units picked per foot of travel.
  • Cubic Utilization: Percentage of available bin/rack space effectively utilized.
  • Replenishment Reduction: Minimizing out-of-stock situations in forward-pick locations.

Why this role is critical

In a modern fulfillment center, labor is the highest cost. By optimizing where products live, the Slotting Analyst directly impacts the bottom line by reclaiming wasted time and space. You turn a static warehouse into a dynamic, high-performance engine.
